Keeping our children close to their families

About

  • Are you a Grandparent raising a child?
  • Do you need a little help?
  • Would you like to meet others just like you?

The 2001 census estimated that there are 7,400 kinship carers in Wales, 66% of whom are grandparents.

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Cardiff is a Cardiff-based support group for grandparents and other kinship carers caring for a child full-time. All of the committee are grandparents with personal understanding of these situations.

What is “kinship care”?

Kinship care means an arrangement where children live a relative or a close friend, not their birth parents. These children may have already suffered some kind of loss or trauma. The only alternative to kinship care is local authority care - and possibly adoption.

What can GRG Cardiff do for me?

  • We reach out to every grandparent and kinship carer who is looking after a child, and provide the opportunity to meet others in similar situations.
  • We extend the hand of friendship to grandparents who are struggling to retain contact with their grandchildren.
  • We offer emotional and practical support, and access to information and advice, such as helping grandparents and kinship carers understand their rights, legal options and financial entitlements, or helping prepare for meetings or assessments and interacting with professionals.
  • We promote a positive attitude to Kinship Care, and signpost carers to services and organisations who can help.

Grandparents and kinship carers become full-time carers for all sorts of reasons. And raising a child can be challenging as well as rewarding. Life has changed since you raised your own children. u might feel isolated, or overwhelmed. Answers can be difficult to find.

GRG Cardiff is the hand to hold, the listening ear, the shoulder to cry on, GRG Cardiff can provide information, from grandparents who have been in similar situations, and support you in the impact of difficult decisions.

Did you know?

These individuals were raised by their grandparents:

Maya Angelou, Pierce Brosnan, Carol Burnett, Burack Obama, Jamie Foxx, James Earl Jones, George Lopez, Oprah Winfrey, Jack Nicholson, Eric Clapton

Our Work

Unfortunately, kinship carers have been overlooked by governments unwilling to recognise the difference kinship carers make to children who would otherwise go in to the care system. Research shows that children do much better when living with kinship carers.

GRG Cardiff is committed to improving the lives of grandchildren (and kinship carers) and the children they care for, through our support group, and as a secondary aim, by speaking up to the government on behalf of kinship carers.

We understand that to make things easier for kinship carers across Wales we must speak with one voice that can influence professionals and decision makers in health and social services, and make them aware of issues and services that affect grandparents and kinship carers.

Where and when?

GRG Cardiff meet monthly at "Unite, 1 Cathedral Road, Cardiff" a central location near multiple bus routes.

Please call or look at our Facebook page for the next meeting date and time.

Come join us for a coffee / tea and chat. It’s FREE and all are welcome!
